Antique Victorian Ironstone Scale Plate

Antique Victorian Ironstone Scale Plate

£40.00Price

A truly wonderful antique Victorian ironstone scale plate, which originally formed the flat pan of a shopkeeper's or grocer's weighing scale system. Produced primarily between 1880 and 1900, these heavy plates were used in Victorian and Edwardian butcher shops, grocers and commercial dairies to weigh provisions like butter, cheese, and meats. Highly sought after nowadays and repurposed as rustic charcuterie boards, cheese platters, or decorative wall hangings. Measures 8ins diameter and in great condition. The distinct underglaze black transfer print features an emblem representing honest commerce. It portrays "Lady Justice" (blindfolded with her scales) standing alongside "Saint Faith" (holding a staff/cross) atop a globe with the British lion at their side. Very interesting piece of history.
