Antique Writing Slope
Also known as a ‘lap desk’ or ‘correspondence box’ and very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Victorian and Georgian. This is a particularly large one; measuring 17.5ins x 9.5ins x 6.5ins tall. It even contains two Victorian glass ink wells, although the tops are damaged. The key is also available though I haven’t dared to try it! The beautiful lid opens to reveal the crimson leather writing board with gold leaf edges. There is also a secret compartment, opened by using the ribbon, to store documents. The removable section for resting your quill or pencil is smooth and intact. Some wear to the box edges but, overall, in excellent condition. I have a smaller version myself and use it to store jewellery.
