Old Stoneware Ink Well

I'm going to be honest here, I have no idea what this was used for originally! Goggle tells me that it is an old ink well from a school desk, but I think the interior star shape is too ornate for that.  A mystery to me, perhaps you know?  I think it is perfect as a little candle holder though and that's what I would use it for.  It does have a chip at the base, but that just makes me love it even more! 1.25ins high x 2ins diameter.
